First Samples Obtained from Sub-Glacial Antarctic Lake

Russian scientists were the first signs of pure water ice of a subglacial lake in Antarctica during the drilling of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, said.
In February 2012, after decades of drilling, Russian scientists were finally able to penetrate the ice sheet of Antarctica, at a depth of about 3.7 km east of the lake to reveal the secret that had been sealed there for the last 20 million years.
The researchers hope that the East, which is the largest network of buried glacial lake in Antarctica, as well as one of the largest lakes in the world, can reveal new life forms and show how life evolved before the ice age.
The scientists studied water samples obtained before, when drilled deep into the back of the lake in 2012, but did not know they were samples of the lake water, instead of water to the inside a glacier above the lake.

So to get to the lake ice, the researchers drilled into the glacier again in January 2013.
"The first nuclei transparent glacial lakes, two meters long, was obtained on January 10, at a depth of 3406 meters. Was inside a vertical channel sparkling ice-rich" Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute , which is part of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring Environment, the statement said.
The institute said that the composition and origin of the new base is determined.
The discovery of hidden lakes of Antarctica in 1990 has caused a stir among scientists worldwide. Some people think that the ice was formed on the edge of hydrostatic seal with the surface to prevent loss of water from the lake and stayed inside something else.
Vostok ice may have physical properties that are different from the usual ice, said Vyacheslav Azarov, head of logistics center Russian Antarctic Expedition.
