"I'm ready to be the first man to be launched into space by the Iranian scientists," Ahmadinejad said on Monday, as part of an exhibition of achievements in Tehran, according to the news agency Mehr.

"Sending of life in space is the result of Iran's efforts and dedication of thousands of Iranian scientists."

Ahmadinejad is known for his provocative comments from the public and it was not clear whether the proposal is serious.

His second and final term as president ends in June, and his political star has been declining since he quarreled with Parliament at the beginning of his second term and seemed to lose the support of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

On Sunday, he got Parliament to play a recording that said that corruption has provided evidence of the President of the parliamentary family, Ali Larijani, his great political rival, and arguably one of the favorites to succeed him as president. Fazel Larijani and his brother has denied the allegations.
